Beyond the Chair: Innovation and Startups in Dentistry

The BMIIL Incubation Center (Bareilly MedTech Incubation & Innovation Labs) conducted an Innovation and Startups in Dentistry Program for postgraduate students of the Institute of Dental Sciences, with the objective of fostering innovation, structured clinical problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking in dentistry and oral healthcare.

The program was designed as a high-energy innovation sprint, moving away from conventional lecture-based formats to an experiential, problem-solving approach. Students were encouraged to reflect on everyday clinical challenges encountered in dental practice and were guided through a structured ideation process to develop viable, solution-oriented concepts.

A total of 48 postgraduate students participated in the session and were organized into nine teams. Each team was provided a strictly timed window to identify a systemic clinical pain point—related to cost, patient comfort, clinical efficiency, or workflow optimization—followed by a concise solution pitch. The exercise resulted in several high-potential ideas and created an atmosphere of active engagement and collaborative thinking.

The session demonstrated that when the focus shifts from memorizing clinical problems to architecting practical solutions, students exhibit significantly higher levels of engagement, creativity, and innovation. The ideas generated reflected opportunities across dental devices, patient-centric care models, workflow optimization, and technology-enabled dental solutions.

Addressing the participants, Mr. Claudius Lazarus, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, BMIIL, emphasized that innovation in dentistry begins with clinical observation and structured problem identification, reiterating BMIIL’s commitment to supporting dental students in translating academic and clinical learning into innovation-driven healthcare solutions.

The program further reinforced BMIIL’s focus on mentorship, innovation frameworks, and incubation support, highlighting the potential for nurturing dentistry-led startups within the incubation ecosystem.

The organizers acknowledged the contribution of Dr. (Prof.) Shivangi Sharma, Institute of Dental Sciences, for her role in mobilizing postgraduate student participation and sustaining engagement throughout the program.
